The Meaning Behind The Name …

The company name for your business has numerous branding, marketing and web implications so it needs to be considered carefully. Your company name goes before you, needs to be memorable and also needs to be workable on the internet for SEO marketing.

I have learned a lot from my many years as an entrepreneur, both part-time and full-time but one of the biggest marketing things I learned was how important one’s business name is. Let’s be frank, shall we. A mediocre name will not blatantly be seen or taken seriously for what you and your business truly represent. You should never underestimate how many choices you have. Stand out because greatness comes with patience … And it can all start with your company name, which people will be typing, clicking on or tapping on every single day. In spite of the possible frustration you may be experiencing, coming up with a name for your business is quite straightforward. Here’s a breakdown of the steps which will help make this process much easier for you …

  • Compile a list of keywords that strike a chord with you.
  • Identify your favourite keywords and study how you formed those ideas.
  • Plug your keywords into generators to see if combinations are available for registration.
  • Browse through domain portfolios to get further inspiration for what’s actually out there.

If for some reason you feel stuck on coming up with some truly great keywords try searching for acronyms, mash-ups, inspiration from literature or even foreign words. Try looking at your product/service from another angle. Does it remind you of something else? But low and behold … it must TELL YOUR STORY.

If opportunity doesn’t knock, build a door. ~ Milton Berle

Now, if you are able to perform those few simple steps in that particular order, you will find yourself with a handful of great business names. And to top it off, at a really reasonable price! Just remember, while you’re doing this to pay close attention to the emotional responses that your new business name may provoke. A name you truly connect with might be a compatible choice but what are your customers/clients going to feel about it?

A few small tips, if I may …

  • Be unique and unforgettable;
  • Avoid unusual spellings;
  • Keep it simple and easy to pronounce;
  • Give a clue that provides information; and
  • Don’t box yourself in (aka. Geographical location).

So, by now you’re probably curious … how did I come up with the name Virtually Untangled when I re-branded? Well here’s my story …

The meaning behind Virtually Untangled

For those of you who don’t know much about my past as an entrepreneur, my current business was previously name MyDesignSmash. At the time I thought it was clever and would stand out from the crowd. My business was also a mixture of my graphic design/web work as well as my portfolio for my work as an artist which went along nicely with my marketing plan for my local art shows (ArtSmash).

However, over time as I grew my business into the stages of full-time I realized this is how I wanted to portray my business to the online work. The name MyDesignSmash was built for a younger crowd and perhaps only the area of my artistic skills, not something that would drive traffic to individuals looking for the specific services that I offer as a designer, virtual assistant and blogger. And through that thought process I realized what a perfect time it was to change the whole face of my business, name and all, since I was now taking the leap of faith I should have many years ago in building my empire as a full-time business.

Now to the good stuff … how I create my name.

Graphic and website design were not my only passions, career-wise. I am also a very organized individual as well as a blogger so was trying to come up with a fitting name that revolved around all services and what they meant to the person receiving them. I also wanted my business to be virtual so there were no geographical hold-ups with whom I could assist with my skilled talents. It didn’t sound simple at first but then it hit me … all I truly wanted for my business was to be virtual and to help as many entrepreneurs as possible with my creative and organizational skills. In reality, there just aren’t enough hours in the day to accomplish all our business goals. So how could I portray those goals and desires in a new business name?

And with that Virtually Untangled was born.

The “virtual” part is a given. As for the “untangled” portion of my name … I wanted to be able to help people gain a clutter-free work life by helping them find some sort of balance. I wanted to help people feeling inspired make their big picture a reality. I wanted those struggling to find time be able to focus on their true passion(s). So, in reality, to me, that meant a whole lot of “untangling”. And by that, I mean assisting entrepreneurs organize, build and manage their business goals with ease. To help them FINALLY clear up those ever-growing to do lists and to help them make their big picture a reality by finding a happy work/life balance. I wanted to inspire and connect with entrepreneurs to put their best selves forward every single day.

And that is what I have been doing to accomplish every client’s foals with passion and integrity, organizational continuity, and stability and growth all with creative edge based upon their individual needs. And you know what … I couldn’t be happier! My business name has helped create a path for the type of business I want to be. And truthfully, yours should too!

Never, ever forget that your name is the first thing to come out of your mouth (or on screen, if you’re virtual like me) every time you pitch your company. Be brave in the sense that you want to be unique and unforgettable.

If you’re feeling stuck on the type of business name you want to reflect your business manifesto, touch base and let’s bounce around some ideas. I’d love to help and be a part of your business’ creative process!

As she worked toward her dreams, she earned a diploma as a Computer Applications Specialist then another in Graphic Design and from there began to develop her extensive background in multimedia and the arts. She began her worked in the magazine industry as a layout designer and had a succession of design jobs thereafter. It was her role as a graphic/web designer that gave her the first real glimpse of her future. Soon she began a side job as a freelance designer while keeping one foot in the corporate world. A spark was lit! She turned her freelance gig into a full-time business combining design work with her other passion: creating organization from virtual chaos.

Crystal is one of the most organized individuals on the planet. She is by all means a Zen master of her crafts. She excels at helping others become “untangled” and provides her clients with tools to run their businesses smoothly while she takes care of the details behind the scenes.
