Ruth Hargrave’s Success Story …

I got started with my business Summit Consulting about 15 years ago while I was still half time at the Louis Riel School Division here in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. I was given the opportunity to give workshops on Restitution, Control Theory and Developmental Teaching. This brought me to where I am today … teaching Mindful Leadership and Control Theory. I am also mentoring in 5 local schools as well as 7 independently strong women. Through my work I have had the pleasure of teaching mindfulness all around the world!

You may encounter many defeats, but you must not be defeated. In fact, it may be necessary to encounter the defeats, so you can know who you are, what you can rise from, how you can still come out of it. ~ Maya Angelou, American Poet

A bit of backstory …

I am a trainer/facilitator for educators, students, parents and caregivers. I am presently and entrepreneur with my business Summit Consulting where I provide workshops on Restitution and Control Theory, as well as Youth Leadership. I have taught students from Kindergarten right through grade 9, specializing in the English language, guidance counselling and behavior intervention with the Louis Riel School Division. I am also presently consulting and mentoring in several schools within the St. James-Assiniboia School Division by supporting the implementation of Restitution in the classrooms and presenting role playing in school assemblies to create further awareness.

I truly enjoy educating teachers, parents and students in schools throughout the province of Manitoba.

I have had the pleasure of being the president and professional development chair of the Manitoba School Guidance Counsellors (MSCA). And am constantly on the go giving workshops and presentations to numerous school staff members and parent groups throughout Manitoba, British Columbia, Nunavut, Saskatchewan, the United States, Europe and Asia.

I have (and still am) teaching courses in all those locations (whenever life allows for travel time) on Restitution and Control Theory, Developmental Therapy/Teaching (DTT) and provided training for Group Theraplay – Taking Care of Each Other (TCEO) and student leadership training.

In my many years as a Guidance Counsellor, I discovered the philosophy and concepts of Restitution/Control Theory and DTT which were instrumental in facilitating successful learning and problem solving for many challenging situations. I use a form called Theraplay as an intervention program to support and guide parents and teachers whose children are struggling to succeed in the school systems.

Theraply is a lively, engaging, playful treatment method that produces remarkable changes in the lives of children and families by strengthening the parent-child relationship. The Theraplay therapist aides the parent and child through playful, fun games, developmentally challenging activities, and tender, nurturing activities. The very act of engaging each other in this way helps the parent regulate the child’s behaviour and communicate love, joy and safety to the child. It helps the child feel secure, cared for, connected and worthy.

Theraplay involves parents or caregivers actively in sessions with their children in order to create or fine-tune the parent-child relationship. It focuses on strengthening four main components of the parent-child relationship:

  • Structure: setting limits for children so they can enjoy physical and emotional security.
  • Engagement: excitement, stimulation, and surprise to maintain a child’s alertness and interest.
  • Nurture: warm, soothing and comforting ways of caring for children.
  • Challenge: encourage the child to learn new skills, to take some age-appropriate risks, and to experience success and increase self-confidence.

Through these workshops, individuals learn how to teach students to become more self-reliant, responsible and intrinsically motivated leaders. I feel my workshops are enjoyable and meaningful and include many interactive and personalizing opportunities for the participants. However, the Control Theory and Mindful Leadership teachings are specifically for students, teachers, educational assistants and parents, and would benefit truly anyone else who wants to have some life altering insights for themselves and their families and colleagues.

I am currently working on a plan to extend these types of training opportunities to the leadership level of businesses as well as for individuals looking to increase their level of personal empowerment.

The challenge of leadership is to be strong, but not rude; be kind, but not weak; be bold, nut not bully; be thoughtful, but not lasy; be humble, but not timid; be proud, but not arrogant; have humor, but without folly. ~ Jim Rohn, American Entrepreneur

How I grow …

I continue to work on personal growth as an entrepreneur, a mindfulness consultant and heartful human being by non-stop learning. I’m always researching new theories and writing blog posts on my site to share my findings with others. I also provide educational teachables on my website which is for educators, parents and business personnel, with suggestions about mindfulness activities and practices, leadership lesson and activities, and generally, best practices for creating effective learning and work environments for everyone involved. And lastly, my favourite part of my personal mindfulness practices every day, my quote of the day page on my website. To me, quotes are inspirational as goals to aspire to each day. So, why not learn from others’ lessons and wisdom! Basically, all human beings want peace, connection and a feeling of worthiness and success on their journey through life. The quotes I gather and share on this page have inspired my Summit Consulting team and it is my hope that they will inspire you too as you find the quote you need every single day.

I hope my story; my teachings and these daily quotes are inspiring for you every single day!

Crystal Kordalchuk

Crystal is an artist, a writer, an organizer, a dreamer, a doer, and down-right proud of it NERD!.

Struck with a love for #AllThings creative at a very young age, Crystal dreamed of a life fueled by her passion for creating and bringing the stories and images in her mind into reality.

As she worked toward her dreams, she earned a diploma as a Computer Applications Specialist then another in Graphic Design and from there began to develop her extensive background in multimedia and the arts. She began her worked in the magazine industry as a layout designer and had a succession of design jobs thereafter. It was her role as a graphic/web designer that gave her the first real glimpse of her future. Soon she began a side job as a freelance designer while keeping one foot in the corporate world. A spark was lit! She turned her freelance gig into a full-time business combining design work with her other passion: creating organization from virtual chaos.

Crystal is one of the most organized individuals on the planet. She is by all means a Zen master of her crafts. She excels at helping others become “untangled” and provides her clients with tools to run their businesses smoothly while she takes care of the details behind the scenes. Thus Virtually Untangled was born. A successful business where her work as a top notch creative in graphic and web — with a twist of virtual assistant — married into one amazing place where clients can come with their virtual messes and become magically untangled. Crystal can always make sense of even the most unorganized chaos and offers a virtual detox of order and peace, so her clients can get busy doing the work that they love the most.
