Interview with Mahlena-Rae Johnson – For Nerdy Girls
Company: For Nerdy Girls (Website)
Facebook Page: www.facebook.com/fornerdygirls
Over the last while I’ve had the pleasure of becoming great entrepreneurial friends with Mahlena-Rae Johnson (from ForNerdyGirls.com). She is such an inspiring individual who provides new insights by sharing stories about “nerdy” for “nerdy” girls in business. She changes the lives of lady bosses all over the world. Her story and business resonated so much with me that I just NEEDED to interview her and share it with you.
Now let’s hear what Mahlena-Rae had to say …
Tell us a bit about you and your business …
I’m a Social Media Marketing Expert, Multicultural Storyteller, and Comedic Genius. I write books, which are now available on Amazon. My fourth book, Love at a Luau, was published just this past May. It’s a romance novel about a refugee suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) who is scared to fall in love with a single dad. I also run a company called For Nerdy Girls, a platform with stories for, by and about nerdy women.
What inspired the passion within you to do what you do?
The need for media representation for all people. I started my company, Mr. J Media, in 2007 to publish my first novel, Steve the Penguin. I couldn’t find books, movies or TV shows about people who look, and act like me. So instead of only complaining about the patriarchy on my blog, I decided to also create the types of projects that I would like to see.
Walk us through a typical day in the life of For Nerdy Girls?
My long-term goal is to become a Billionaire Mum. Only $1B to go! LOL! At the moment, since I’m a freelancer, every day in my week is different. But different days have different themes. For instance, on Friday mornings I have “Executive Time”, which means I have a set period to think by myself with no meetings.
How do you continue to ignite that fire within you?
I have more ideas than time to fully write all of them. The fire is always there. I could honestly write a one-page story about any word. Seriously, pick one (haha)! Currently I’m working on my fifth book and two short web series, while ignoring the scores of ideas I’ve already outlined for the future.
What were some of the challenges you had to overcome to get to where you are today?
So many! And, where am I? LOL! Mostly not achieving my goals of creating my own television network or not becoming an entertainment marketing executive. None of the stuff I am doing now was part of my original plan. However, when I graduated from college … Facebook, YouTube, LinkedIn and Twitter did not exist, so I could not have planned a career around platforms I’d never heard of. Now I use each of those for my business every single day.
Looking forward into the next few years, what goals are you most excited about?
Developing a profitable business model for my For Nerdy Girls business probably based on growing my audience around entertaining content and creating partnerships, sponsorships and affiliate relationships.
If another entrepreneur asked for your advice and you only had a few short minutes to give them your best tip, what would it be?
Solve someone’s else problem then figure out how to make money from that experience.
What is it about your business that keeps you inspired?
Some people actually listen to me but with that being said … I wish they would leave comments on my site or social media platforms more often. Hint-hint!
What three words would you use to describe your business? Your personality?
I feel that the words that would describe both my business and my personality would be the same … authentic, entertaining and knowledgeable.
Anything else you’d like to add Mahlena?I like choco chip cookies!

As she worked toward her dreams, she earned a diploma as a Computer Applications Specialist then another in Graphic Design and from there began to develop her extensive background in multimedia and the arts. She began her worked in the magazine industry as a layout designer and had a succession of design jobs thereafter. It was her role as a graphic/web designer that gave her the first real glimpse of her future. Soon she began a side job as a freelance designer while keeping one foot in the corporate world. A spark was lit! She turned her freelance gig into a full-time business combining design work with her other passion: creating organization from virtual chaos.
Crystal is one of the most organized individuals on the planet. She is by all means a Zen master of her crafts. She excels at helping others become “untangled” and provides her clients with tools to run their businesses smoothly while she takes care of the details behind the scenes.
