Social Media – a Necessary Evil?
It seems everywhere you turn these day, you hear more and more about social-media-this and social-media-that. Many people I know (clients included) are constantly asking, “Is social media something I have to do?”
My answer is this … the point of social media is not to force you into something. It is also not something that makes you feel like you should “just to do it”. Social media, when properly leveraged, is a very powerful business tool in the world today. In reality, it’s not really a “necessary evil” but more of a necessary business tool for establishing, managing and marketing your brand, creating and extending your network.
Why do most business owners “kill themselves” at working so hard to been seen in the social world? Because being on social media is about two things … communication and engagement – people love looking for a way to interact with and become involved So, finding creative and effective ways to communicate and engage with people is truly the key to social media success.
Still on the fence?
Here are a few good reasons to why social media is necessary:
- Your competitors are already socially active.
- People like branding – This is just reality. People enjoy being part of a business that brands themselves proactively. It tends to give us that warm and fuzzy feeling when we see our business (o others) building a community. Being active will help you build, manage and market your business.
- Expands potential client/customer base quickly – You can build strong relationships with both current and potential clients/customers by commenting on their posts, offering suggestions and/or solutions when appropriate, free resources and maybe even discounts on your products/services.
- Expands your network – Having the ability, right at your fingertips, to reach out to like-minded individuals who are in the business makes life so much easier. So, when your email is off the hook and you need a new idea or solution right away you know exactly who to go to. Or at least have means for looking for a recommendation from those who understand you and your business the most.
When you are ready … take some time to formulate a plan and put it into action. Watch how having social media as part of your business plan adds to your bottom line. Makes your bigger picture more visible. You will be surprise at the results. More communication and client engagement will inevitably lead to more return on your investment. Which we all know this is what you want. We all do.
Happy social media-ing!

Crystal is an artist, a writer, an organizer, a dreamer, a doer, and down-right proud of it NERD!.
Struck with a love for #AllThings creative at a very young age, Crystal dreamed of a life fueled by her passion for creating and bringing the stories and images in her mind into reality.
As she worked toward her dreams, she earned a diploma as a Computer Applications Specialist then another in Graphic Design and from there began to develop her extensive background in multimedia and the arts. She began her worked in the magazine industry as a layout designer and had a succession of design jobs thereafter. It was her role as a graphic/web designer that gave her the first real glimpse of her future. Soon she began a side job as a freelance designer while keeping one foot in the corporate world. A spark was lit! She turned her freelance gig into a full-time business combining design work with her other passion: creating organization from virtual chaos.
Crystal is one of the most organized individuals on the planet. She is by all means a Zen master of her crafts. She excels at helping others become “untangled” and provides her clients with tools to run their businesses smoothly while she takes care of the details behind the scenes. Thus Virtually Untangled was born. A successful business where her work as a top notch creative in graphic and web — with a twist of virtual assistant — married into one amazing place where clients can come with their virtual messes and become magically untangled. Crystal can always make sense of even the most unorganized chaos and offers a virtual detox of order and peace, so her clients can get busy doing the work that they love the most.
