What’s YOUR WHY?
Are you a huge music buff (well, buff-et, lol!) like me?
Anytime I hear someone talking about their why, I instantly start singing in my head the song Legend by The Score … “A dreamer with the fever to be great was all I ever want, was all I ever wanted “ or (depending on my music mood that day) Legendary by Welshly Arms … “Cause we’re gonna be legends. Gonna get their attention. What we’re doing here ain’t just scary. It’s about to be legendary”.
(I apologize in advance if I now have some legendary tunes stuck in your head. HaHA!)
Let’s dive into YOUR WHY. This answers the question of, “What’s my purpose in life?” Author Simon Sinek sums it up beautifully, “Everyone has a WHY — It is the purpose, cause or belief that drives every one of us.”
With that being said, let’s dive into that a bit deeper …
How important is it to have a why? Anthony Burrow is a developmental psychologist and director of the Purpose and Identity Processes Laboratory at Cornell University. He ran a study that came to a shocking conclusion … People who feel a sense of purpose in their lives may be better able to handle daily stress. (They also made more money too!)
“With much attention given to the value of having a sense of purpose for greater health and well-being, it was interesting to explore its value in the context of material wealth,” Burrow said. “Taken together, there is growing evidence a sense of purpose in life is truly an asset worth cultivating.” In short, YOUR WHY improves your overall well-being and life. It is the reason you get up every morning. The reason behind your actions, dedication, and even bucket list dreams. Some of you may not even realize what it is that drives you.
Now you may understand the importance of having your own why but are unsure where to start. There are basically FOUR KEY AREAS you should know about yourself first, in order to understand and develop YOUR WHY statement.
The first is your values.
- What do you value in life?
- What do you consider to be the best way to live?
Oftentimes, in a business, these come off as keywords that they want to be known for. For Virtually Untangled, we value communication, productivity, and efficiency. For you, it could be hard work, compassion, and leadership.
The next piece of the puzzle is understanding your skills and talents.
- What are you good at?
- What do you consider to be your strengths?
When you know this mix, you can enjoy life with more fulfilment too! For Virtually Untangled, we are skilled at design (graphic, web and the written word), organization and productivity, and technology problem solving. For you, it could be data entry, organization, and problem solver.
Lastly, you should consider your passions.
- What brings fire to your belly?
- What do you believe you are called to do in life?
- What drives you to drag your butt out of bed each morning?
The passion is what adds the fuel to the fire. This is about connecting with an idea much bigger than yourself but something you care about too. For Virtually Untangled, we are passionate about bringing creativity, organization, stability and ease-of-mind to the businesses of our clients while forming long-lasting relationships with them — our client’s aren’t just numbers, they’re our friends! — all the while remaining agile with our thinking, being responsive to current and emerging technologies (we’re a bit nerdy over here!) and living a passionately creative life through #AllThings design and organization.
As you answer these questions, it should start to get a bit clearer as to what your Why is. I asked the team members of VU to chime in with their WHY statements in hopes they inspire you to create your own …
Ashley’s WHY is to create a movement that simplifies email marketing for small businesses while balancing her ambitious dreams and personal life in order to be an exceptional wife and mother.
Rebecca’s WHY is to … is to make client’s lives easier by assisting them with their administrative tasks, while growing her own business and planting her feet in the ground as an ambitious entrepreneur. Being a wife and mother fuels her fire to do what she loves by developing and growing her business and to enjoy and take in every moment of it!
Do you feel how powerful these statements are?
Don’t get imposter syndrome on me now! Or feel #FOMO … Jot down your answers and let us know in the comments below what your WHY STATEMENT is!

Struck with a love for #AllThings creative at a very young age, Crystal dreamed of a life fueled by her passion for creating and bringing the stories and images in her mind into reality.
As she worked toward her dreams, she earned a diploma as a Computer Applications Specialist then another in Graphic Design and from there began to develop her extensive background in multimedia and the arts. She began her worked in the magazine industry as a layout designer and had a succession of design jobs thereafter. It was her role as a graphic/web designer that gave her the first real glimpse of her future. Soon she began a side job as a freelance designer while keeping one foot in the corporate world. A spark was lit! She turned her freelance gig into a full-time business combining design work with her other passion: creating organization from virtual chaos.
Crystal is one of the most organized individuals on the planet. She is by all means a Zen master of her crafts. She excels at helping others become “untangled” and provides her clients with tools to run their businesses smoothly while she takes care of the details behind the scenes.
